One Direction’s Harry Styles has got a way with words. He didn’t think that Kate Middleton looked very “bumpy” at the Royal Variety show this evening.

The Steal My Girl hitmaker was joined by his fellow bandmates – Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik for the meeting – shook hands with the Duchess of Cambridge, who is 16 weeks pregnant, and congratulated her.

“I said congratulations on the bump,” he said. “(Though) she didn’t look bumpy.”

Harry, 20, wore a leopard print jacket for the occasion, while his fellow band members pretty much stuck to full black get-ups, aside from Zayn, who added a splash of colour with his brown long-sleeved jumper.

Kate is currently 16 weeks pregnant and she joined her husband Prince William on the red carpet ahead of tonight’s show at the London Palladium.

The royal couple chatted with One Direction about their touring plans - with Prince William promising he had been "keeping a close eye" on the young pop stars.

"It's the most nervous I think I've ever been in my life," band member Liam said.

Louis said he feared he had made a serious faux pas.

"I didn't say ma'am," he said, as the royal couple made their way into the theatre. "I said - Hi. How are you? I'm Louis."

Liam joked: "So he's off to a bad start."

Stars at the show include Ellie Goulding, Ed Sheeran, Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato.
