ON THE same day a poll revealed her popularity with voters has lifted to match the PM’s, intensely private foreign minister Julie Bishop stepped out at Melbourne Cup with a handsome man.
Ms Bishop, in citrus green silk attire with pretty floral headpiece, relaxed in the lavish Emirates’ marquee for the day rubbing shoulders with celebrities including Bold And The Beautiful star Ron Moss, visiting Sports Illustrated model and former girlfriend of pop star Cody Simpson, Gigi Hadid, and the inescapable Geoffrey Edelsten with new transvamp-styled fiancee Gabi Grecko.

Having spent part of the day nursing the Melbourne Cup trophy, Ms Bishop spent the rest of it nursing a bit of a crush, it seemed, on Melbourne businessman David Panton.
It took some probing, but eventually the coy Ms Bishop confirmed she and Mr Panton have been in a relationship for six months.

A property investor, Mr Panton recently relocated to Melbourne from Manly.
Among other things, Mr Panton and Ms Bishop share a love for sports and fitness.
In a Flemington marquee stuffed to overflowing on Cup Day with the affluent, the corpulent and ebullient, Ms Bishop and her new love - toned and tanned and dignified - rather stood out.
Mr Panton had paired his dark suit with a vivid violet tie complementing Ms Bishop’s race day outfit.

The couple were also joined by Mr Panton’s two attractive adult daughters who were amused by media interest in their father’s love match.
The only woman in the prime minister’s cabinet, Ms Bishop, 58, was previously married, from 1983 to 1988 to property developer Neil Gillon. The couple had no children.
After divorcing, Ms Bishop has never remarried.
The one-time Clayton Utz managing partner has dated high profile men including Liberal state MP and Senator Ross Lightfoot and former Lord Mayor of Perth Dr Peter Nattrass.
