IT’S been a year of reality TV scandal, cliffhanger finales, windfall ratings and a whole lotta WTF moments.
From the cringe-worthy Bachelor love triangle and the #Clawson cheating saga on Big Brother, to Thorpie’s TV tell-all and shock Block auction result — here are the biggest TV moments that had everyone talking in 2014.
What can only be described as an absolute s**t storm, Ten’s season of The Bachelor had the entire news.com.au office begging for the fallout to please. fade. away.
It started with a picturesque TV proposal that quickly went belly-up and ended with more versions of “the truth” from everyone involved. Blake, Sam, Louise, Lisa, Blake’s mother, Louise’s father, Laurina’s pet dog Bambi. Did we miss anyone?
Thanks for the drama, Channel 10. Bring on the double dose of Bach in 2015.

The Block Glasshouse finale made jaws around Australia drop to the floor with the most uneven result in the show’s history. Two teams walked away from the Melbourne auctions with a measly $10,000 for their five months’ worth of backbreaking work.
Series winners Shannon and Simon Vos, who’s Prahran apartment sold for $1,910,000, described their triumph as “bittersweet”, while Daz and Dee Jolly admitted they were “devastated” with their $10k winnings. Channel 9 sure had reason to celebrate though. The reno show finale delivered a tidy audience of 2.687 million viewers nationally.

When former Olympian Ian Thorpe sat down with British talk show legend Sir Michael Parkinson and publicly addressed the question that has dogged him for years, 1.3 million Aussies tuned in. After years of public denials and endless speculation surrounding his sexuality, Thorpie finally revealed that he is gay.
The 90-minute world exclusive on Channel 10 was met by a flood of support for the five-time Olympic gold medallist and proved to be ratings gold for the network.

Speaking of ratings juggernaughts, Seven’s My Kitchen Rules grand final delivered in spades. More than 2.7 million viewers watched South Australian mums Bree and Jess be crowned 2014’s winners. Early bets were on our resident baddies, Chloe and Kelly, for the win but the mums trumped them by two points.
While the trash-talking travellers didn’t take out the trophy, they sure provided the LOLs. Kelly’s priceless facial expressions soon transformed into everyone’s favourite meme.

He came, he danced (almost) but mostly he just clowned around for a few live shows (and managed to offend basically everyone unfortunate enough to be watching Dancing with the Stars while he was on).
Mark Holden’s bizarre Bobo the clown routine copped a shellacking from the judges, with Todd McKenney slamming the 60-year-old for “hijacking” the show. Viewers agreed that the circus-themed skit was about four and-a-half minutes too long and left everyone wanting to scratch their eyes out.

The #Clawson cheating scandal was the most talked-about controversy to arise from this year’s Big Brother.
Lawson’s month-long affair with Cat inside the house caused a media frenzy on the outside, with the amateur magician’s long-term girlfriend Candice Leeder forced to go into hiding. Lawson, 23, was branded a “love rat”, while Cat, 31, was the cougar kissing another woman’s man on national television.
It would be a shame for Nine to pull the pin on Big Brother in 2015, but this season’s ratings have the future of the long-running reality show hanging under a cloud.

The Project favourite Carrie Bickmore shocked viewers, her co-hosts and even the production crew when she dropped the bombshell on live TV that she is expecting her second child.
“Speaking of babies, I have some news for you, I am having a baby,” she announced during a segment back in October.
It was a year of bombshells for Ten’s The Project, after losing Dave “Hughesy” Hughes in December last year, the show farewelled Charlie Pickering in March and then Dr Andrew Rochford switched to rival network Seven in June. No word yet on who will keep Bickmore’s seat warm when she leaves to have her second bub.
Coincidentally, The Project is also farewelling Rove McManus tonight after five months filling in as guest host. Who will replace Rove?

Other big TV shockers for 2014 involved what shows have been given the green light for next year and those that have been binned.
Seven’s girlie drama Winners and Losers has been renewed for a fifth season, while A Place to Call Home was axed from the same network. (Thankfully, the drama was later picked up by Foxtel).
After five glorious seasons, it’s not looking promising for Ten’s Offspring, especially now that Asher Keddie is pregnant with her own child. The network is yet to officially make the call but fans of the Aussie drama have pretty much given up hope.
