Zola Tongo, 34, is serving an 18-year sentence for murdering Anni Dewani, but has agreed to give evidence against her husband
The taxi driver jailed for the honeymoon murder of Anni Dewani could serve just five more years because he agreed to give evidence against her husband.
Zola Tongo, 34, got 18 years in 2010 (the usual minimum is 25) and could walk free in 2019, Shrien Dewani’s murder trial heard yesterday.
The driver claims the bridegroom, 34, ordered the killing of his new wife, 28, who was found dead in his abandoned taxi. A short CCTV clip of the couple, whose anniversary was yesterday, was shown in court. Tongo said the Briton was making a call to check two hitmen were in place to ambush his cab near Cape Town.
Dewani, from Bristol, is also seen on his phone outside a restaurant. This call was to confirm payment for his wife’s killing, Tongo claimed.
The driver told the hearing: “Mr Dewani said he had put the money in the pocket behind the seat.”
Dewani denies kidnapping and murder. The trial continues.
