Pepper the humanoid robot recruited by Nestlé to sell coffee machines

Oct 30, 2014

Nestlé recruits Pepper the humanoid robot, who can read and respond to human emotion and wants you to buy coffee. NOW

The unstoppable onslaught of the robots is continuing in Japan, where they will soon be used to… sell coffee machines!

It's another aspect of everyday life that will no longer require the gentle touch of a warm, human hand, if Nestlé Japan’s fiendish scheme comes to fruition.

Say hello (through gritted teeth) to Pepper – the humanoid that will be appearing in Japanese home appliance stores from December.

It’s the world’s first robot with the ability to read and respond to human emotion – which is more than some humans are capable of doing.

Pepper can analyse people’s feelings from their facial expressions and their tone of voice and this amazing technological leap will be used to flog coffee machines.

“Pepper will be able to explain Nescafé products and services and engage in conversation with consumers. I hope that this new consumer engagement model will expand across the world as an example of Japanese innovation,” said Kohzoh Takaoka, President and CEO of Nestlé Japan.

What he doesn't understand is that he is probably about to unleash an unstoppable robot army upon the world.

It might be coffee machine retail today, but eventually Pepper’s eyes will change colour and it’ll reset itself to stun, maim or kill and then we’ll all be done for.

Nestlé is planning to use the robot nationwide in around 1,000 stores by the end of 2015.
