Hastings is being plagued by irresponsible mobility scooter drivers exceeding 4mph
A sleepy seaside town has launched a crackdown on dangerously speeding drivers - riding mobility scooters.
A number of pedestrians have been injured in the East Sussex town of Hastings in recent years after being hit by the buggys.
The casualties include a window cleaner who suffered fractures and a serious head injury when he was knocked off his ladder in a hit and run.
Mayor Bruce Dowling is now urging the town’s ageing population to cut their speed and stay within the legal 4mph limit on pavements.
Some mobility scooters have been clocked doing twice that and new warning signs been put up warning of the risks and telling people to slow down.
Councillor Kim Forward said: “Access in the town is constantly improving for mobility scooter users but safety of all must be considered.
“This new campaign aims to encourage mobility scooter users to reduce their speed in our busy town centre areas.
“Stickers have been designed and placed around the town on lamp posts reminding users to slow down to less than 4mph.”
