The BBC have given the rights for their flagship charity event Comic Relief to America to mark its 30th anniversary.

Founder, movie director Richard Curtis will take the role of the executive producer and has said he is “excited” and delighted that Red Nose Day America will be screened across the USA on television network NBC in May next year.

The live telethon will be recorded at the station's studio in Los Angeles and chiefs there hope to recruit Brit stars such as David Beckham and James Corden – who are huge supporters of Comic Relief – to get involved.

It has not yet been decided who will front the extravaganza but Corden's name is in the frame along with some American A-listers including chat show queen Ellen Degeneres, whose series is screened on NBC.

They are also talking to other US celebrities including Kim Kardashian and her mum Kris, to get involved in some of the witty pre-recorded scenes that are so popular with the viewers.

Parodies, stand up sketches and one-off sitcom reunions will all feature in the three hour show.

Dancing With the Stars are also in talks as to how they can contribute to the live event, just as its UK version Strictly Come Dancing does. There will also be a charity single, like there is in the UK.

The red noses and other merchandise will be sold in shops across the States, supermarket and chemist Walgreens have already signed up to be part of the event, as food chain Sainsbury's does here.

Celebs get involved

Curtis, 57, said: “For many years I have dreamt of bringing Red Nose Day to the US. I am so excited that we have teamed up with NBC who will do such a brilliant job on this.”

Since its launch in 1985, the charity has raised a staggering £750 million for starving people across the globe.

On Christmas Day of that year, Noel Edmonds presented the first ever event from a refugee camp in Sudan.

A source at NBC revealed: “The organisers have had the idea in the pipeline for while but the deal has just been put in place with NBC.

“The main focus is on raising as much money as possible and also education Americans that there are some extremely needy people in the world. The fuss around it is expected to be absolutely massive and so far the feedback they have been getting from showbiz stars they want to be involved is very encouraging.

“The press launch will be either at the end of the year or early 2015, depending on when they have the full line up of people who are to be involved. The BBC are ecstatic that this is happening, it is such a huge event in the UK and is so needed in order to send funds to starving people in Africa.

“The celeb turnout is going to be massive.”

Comic Relief is presented by some of the UK's top television talent including Davina McCall, X Factor host Dermot O'Leary and Jonathan Ross. 2015's British show will be screened on Friday March 13.

Last year Comic Relief bosses were highly criticised for investing some of the millions of pounds of donated money into shares in tobacco, alcohol and arms firms.
