Lauren hits late night! Well, sort of…
Lauren Graham is hard at work shoring up her post-Parenthood plans. After announcing a role on Matthew Perry’s upcoming remake of The Odd Couple and her plans to turn her debut novel, Someday, Someday Maybe, into a pilot possibly named Unfamous, the Gilmore Girls alum, 47, has even more on her plate with a new NBC development deal.
Her potential upcoming half-hour comedy, Kate on Later, has been given the green light and will star Graham as Kate, a woman breaking into the man-dominated world of late-night talk shows. Graham will be acting, writing, and executive producing on the show if it gets picked up.
Daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, whose production company is currently working on finding a home for Graham’s novel adaptation, is also an executive producer for Kate on Later, along with Jeff Kleeman (who is also attached to the Unfamous project).
With Chelsea Handler departing Chelsea Lately earlier this year, many posit that Graham’s new show is a critique of the current TV landscape.
Though this new show will feature a female late night host, it won’t change actual late night television, which currently has an all-male lineup. Even after Craig Ferguson announced his departure from the Late Late Show, CBS enlisted British comedian James Corden to be his official replacement. And before Corden starts, CBS has a lineup of all-male guest hosts — including Judd Apatow, Jim Gaffigan, Wayne Brady, Will Arnett, Thomas Lennon, Kunal Nayyar, Sean Hayes, and John Mayer — that will fill in the gaps.
