Nottinghamshire girl aged 7 injured when cop accidentally fires gun

A seven-year-old girl has been injured after a police officer accidentally fired a gun during a children's visit to a station.

The young girl suffered a cut lip after a gun went off following a talk with firearms officers at Nottinghamshire Police headquarters.

The girl was part of a group of young people a who were visiting the station on Thursday, October 30 after winning a colouring competition.

It has been reported that the group were being shown the force's "specialist services" - including dogs, firearms and traffic cars when the incident happened.

As the firearms officers ended their talk, one of the guns was accidentally fired into the ground - causing an injury to the girl's lip.

It is not yet known how her lip was hurt.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokeswoman said: "Following the incident a seven year old Nottinghamshire girl, who was part of the visiting group, was found with a minor injury to her lip.

"The cause of that injury will now form part of the investigation."

Nottinghamshire’s Assistant Chief Constable, Simon Torr, said: “We are conducting a thorough inquiry to determine exactly how this unfortunate incident happened and have also referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

“We have spoken to the parents who were visiting force headquarters with their children to explain what happened and have apologised for any distress caused.”
