The 13-year-old pug had only gone in for a follow-up visit when owner Kimberly Hayden received the shocking call

A horrified dog owner has told of her shock after a vet cut her beloved pug's EYE out without telling her.

Kimberly Hayden is now considering legal action after her 13-year-old pug Chloe was left with just one eye after Tyrone Banfield Animal Hospital in St Peteresburg, Florida, cut the other one out without telling her.

Miss Hayden originally took her pet to the vet as she noticed a cloudiness in it's left eye.

A vet at the surgery diagnosed the condition as an abrasion to the eye and gave three different ways to treat it.

One was having the eye removed at a cost of £875, another was to treat it with a skin graft for £1,875 and the final option was simply eye drops.

Fearful of causing her treasured pet any harm, Miss Hayden opted for the cheapest option and began treating Chloe with eye drops.

A short while after the vet contacted Miss Hayden asking her to bring Chloe in for a follow-up appointment, and after leaving her dog with them she was stunned to receive a call telling them they had cut out the canine's eye.

Speaking to TV station Fox 13, Miss Hayden said: "Around noon, I get a phone call and the girl on the phone says, "I just want you to know, Chloe is doing well. She's recovering well from surgery".

"I started shaking. I think I stopped breathing for a minute. I was like, "Excuse me? What are you talking about? She's supposed to be there for a follow up" and she goes, "no, we extracted her eye"."

Miss Hayden said that she holds paperwork that proves the dog's eye was never supposed to come out, and that she should have been contacted if any procedures costing more than £3 were being considered.

She said: "As soon as he brought her in the room, I completely broke down. She immediately recognised my voice and came right to me. Jumped up, wanted to be in my lap and curled up into a ball."

Angry: Kimberly Hayden has been telling people on Facebook about what happened to Chloe

Miss Hayden claims that since the operation, Chloe has been left whimpering and seems much less happy and that she is now considering suing.

She added: "Unfortunately none of this will take away the anger, sadness or trauma to my poor dog. "

A spokesman for the veterinary practice admitted they had failed to get permission for the procedure, but claimed it was necessary in order to properly treat the dog.

The spokesman said: "At Banfield Pet Hospital, we are committed to partnering with clients in all decisions regarding their pet’s care. In the instance of Chloe, although the care provided was medically necessary, based on the severity of her condition and lack of response to therapy, we did fail to get surgical authorization from the client on the day of the procedure.

"However, we had previously discussed the need for surgery with the client. We also communicated that surgery was critical to alleviate Chloe’s pain and potential for infection.

"We apologize for the lack of clear communication and will continue to attempt to reach Ms. Hayden in an effort to further resolve her concerns. In the meantime, we wish Chloe a speedy recovery."
