A NEW confidence in Melbourne men will see them embrace clashing colours and patterns at this year’s Spring Racing Carnival.

Fashion designer Dom Bagnato, celebrating his 30th anniversary this year, said Melbourne men have also become increasingly sophisticated in their fashion choices.

“We’re seeing a lot of clashing of textures and colours this year but it has to be done in a sophisticated way or it won’t work,” Mr Bagnato said.

“Men are so much more confident now to just have a go because often it works very well and is rarely a disaster.”

Suit cuts are slim and tones are matched rather than colours — pink can be worn with red or light blue can be worn with dark blue.

Even older men are embracing a quieter version of the trend by wearing soft checked suits with checked shirts.

“Men have a desire now to make a statement which is such a dramatic change from when I started in the business,” he said.

“They are consciously looking to stand out from the crowd.”

MEN’S STYLE TIPS FOR SPRING RACING:

■ DERBY DAY — Try charcoal grey instead of the traditional black suit but bring in the black and white theme with your tie or pocket in either black and white stripes or spots against a crisp white shirt.

■ MELBOURNE CUP DAY — This is the day where we really become a peacock and the time guys can go into character. It has always been the fun day so think of the most extravagant lashings of colour.

■ OAKS DAY — Bring in pink through shirts, ties and pocket squares and keep suits light coloured such as silvers and light blues that allow the pink to dance around the edge. This is the day to lighten up.

■ STAKES DAY — This is a gorgeous day to bring out the navy or deeper blue suit to complement the red, worn with a white shirt for crispness.
