Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris has been brilliantly entertaining but it was a bit of a miss when he went over to David Oyelowo and was greeted with awkward laughter for some bizarre joke.

Seemingly referencing the Selma star being snubbed for a Best Actor nomination, he responded to the audiences' applause by adding: "Oh sure, you like him."

After insisting that "everything sounds better in a British accent", the former How I Met Your Mother actor asked the Selma star if he would help him prove his point.

    What was he thinking?

Neil began: "This year, we said goodbye to some beloved movie franchises."

David took over for the punchline, which featured a strange and seemingly unnecessary reference to the Annie remake featuring black actress Quvenzhane Wallis.

He said: "We saw the last ever Hobbit movie, the last ever Night at the Museum movie, and the last-ever attempt to remake Annie."

After awkward laughter, Neil added: "See, no with the British accent it's not at all insulting…at all. How dare you, sit down!"

Meanwhile, he managed to cause a stir within the first 10 seconds of the show.

The audience looked on in horror as the father-of-two joked: "Welcome to the 87th Oscars. Tonight we honour Hollywood's best and whitest - sorry, I mean brightest."

As the camera panned to the audience, Benedict Cumberbatch didn't look at all impressed.

But judging by the reaction on Twitter, plenty of others thought he was right to call out this year's Academy Awards with a joke about race.

One quoted the joke before saying: "On point!"

While another said: "Niel Patrick called it out that the oscars is the whitest it's been."

And it wasn't long before the joke was overshadowed by an epic sing-a-long with Anna Kendrick and Jack Black.

Meanwhile, the ceremony saw Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel dominate the awards with four prizes each.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inurritu's movie took home the Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay and Cinematography trophies on a very special night for the filmmaker.

Tying with four gongs of its own, Wes Anderson's film was honoured for Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design and Best Original score.

Rita Ora already picked up a fan in Oprah Winfrey after her performance at Harvey Weinstein's pre-Oscars bash as she prepared for the huge event.

While the Fifty Shades of Grey star belted out Academy Award-nominated song Grateful from Beyond the Lights, it was Lady Gaga who stole the show with her Sound of Music tribute.
