As the hitmaker calls time on her relationship just 12 months after her Montenegro wedding, we review the couple's time together
Their marriage may have been short-lived, however Emeli Sande first started dating Adam Gouraguine ten years ago after a chance meeting in Aberdeen.
The award-winning hitmaker, 27, managed to keep her relationship with her "best friend" relatively private ever since she was thrust into the spotlight thanks to her collaboration with Chipmunk on 2009's Diamond Rings.
At the time her man, a qualified marine biologist, was said to be her biggest fan and attended as many of her concerts as he could.
In January 2012 Emeli accepted the scientist's marriage proposal and the couple tied the knot in a secret and intimate ceremony in his homeland of Montenegro eight months later.
They exchanged vows in Kostor, just days after the singer performed a special one-off gig for one thousand fans in the town, in front of a gathering of close friends and family.
Speaking on Montenegrin TV ahead of her big day, she said: "I want to be the part of his life and his family, so I want to add his surname. I want to be part of his tradition."
Adam is reportedly the inspiration behind many of her songs, including My Kind Of Love, which features lyrics such as: "Don't ever question if my heart beats only for you, it beats only for you."
Speaking to the Mirror at the time: "It came to me in the kitchen. I’m engaged and this is about Adam’s unconditional love for me. He’s so separate from the industry, and anything I wanted to do – be a doctor, be a musician – he’s supported me."
News of the pair's divorce surfaced on Monday, after Emeli told The Times she was still coming to terms with the split.
"Everyone thought I'd gone mad. 'What do you mean a divorce? We were all at your wedding a few months ago!' But there was just something inside me that said, 'This isn't the life. You're pretending to be someone else.'"
